Environmental Bill of Rights

The people of Utah recognize the inherent value of the natural environment, and have a right to a healthy environment in which to live.

The people of Utah have a common goal to the protection, conservation and restoration of the natural environment for the benefit of present and future generations.

While the government has the primary responsibility for achieving this goal, the people of Utah should have means to ensure that it is achieved in an effective, timely, open and fair manner.

We the people of Utah understand we need to transition from fossil fuels to more sustainable sources of energy.

To this end we propose the following:

1) We acknowledge the sovereign rights of Indigenous nations over their lands.

2) Mining companies currently in place must be responsible for preserving the environment and for reclamation of the land once the mining operation is complete.
3) Fracking of any kind is extremely harmful to the natural environment and therefore banned in Utah.
4) A citizen review board will be established to ensure that the State Government is held accountable for the protection, preservation and restoration of our natural environment.

We the people of Utah have a right to be able to breathe the air without fear of the damages it will cause.

To this end we propose the following:

1) Infrastructure put into place that supports the use of vehicles which use alternative methods of fuel, such as Hydrogen, and electric vehicles. This infrastructure would include access to fueling/charging stations throughout the state
2) Incentives must be provided such as reducing or eliminating registration fees for fuel efficient vehicles which generate low emissions.

We the people of Utah understand how much damage fossil fuels are to the environment. Our demand for energy is high and we are depleting and damaging the natural environment to feed our requirements for energy. We must end our dependence on the use of energy that is harmful to the natural environment.

To this end we propose the following:

1) We must shift our use of fossil fuels to more sustainable sources of energy, such as solar and wind power, and eventually eliminate the use of harmful energy.

We the people of Utah understand how harmful waste is to our natural environment and the need to reduce, reuse and recycle to help to protect and preserve our natural environment.

To this end we propose the following:

1) We urge people to prioritize efforts to reduce and reuse before recycling.

2) We need to make recycling easier for people, having recycling vending machines available will help keep plastic and glass bottles out of landfills.
3) We need to eliminate the use of single-use plastics such as groceries bags or straws that are not biodegradable and replace them with biodegradable options.

We the people of Utah subscribe to the rights afforded in this Environmental Bill of Rights and pledge to uphold our part in the local efforts to ensure that all Utahns have the right to a healthy, clean environment.
